Following his father's footsteps, Royal Rugs is currently run by Gyurme Dondup who grew up learning that making rugs is not a profession, it is a TRADITION. This is what his father, Kalsang Choewang, instilled in him. Growing up in Kathmandu, Nepal, he helped his father run the business since he was in high school. He is now a second generation rug producer.

Gyurme's dad, Kalsang Choewang, is one of the pioneers in establishing a rug Industry in Kathmandu, Nepal. Mr. Kalsang, 78, found his start whilst being trained as a rug designer in Nepal for the Red Cross operating carpet factory for Tibetan Refugees in Kathmandu, Nepal. From there he worked hard to begin his own company and has become an expert in his field.

Making carpets has been a tradition passed on from one generation to another. Kalsang is pictured here from his factory in Nepal in the April 2002 National Geographic Magazine issue taken by world famous photographer Steve McCurry.
